Unit 3
Places

Writing skill: capital letters – sentences, names, nationalities, days, months, and I.

Week 3 · Place description · min. 50 words

Teacher notes – Unit 3

Learning aim: Students write a short description of a city or place, using capital letters correctly.

Before writing: Write a simple rule list on the board: First word of a sentence → capital. Names of people → capital. Cities and countries → capital. Nationalities → capital. Days and months → capital. The pronoun I → always capital. Ask students to find five capital letters in one example sentence and explain why each one is capital.

During writing: Encourage students to use the tick-list from the book (city name, transport, café, park, culture). Remind them: this is a short travel website text, not a list.

Common errors: (1) Forgetting capital I in the middle of a sentence. (2) Writing ‘french’ or ‘spanish’ in lowercase. (3) Writing days or months in lowercase: ‘monday’, ‘july’.

After writing: Proofreading activity — students highlight every capital letter in their text and explain each one to a partner.
