Listening for Main Ideas and Details
Distinguishing main ideas from supporting details Topic: Routines & StudyLearning Objectives
• Identify the main idea of a short listening text.
• Understand important details: who, what, where, when.
• Tell the difference between a general topic and a specific detail.
Skill Focus: Main Idea vs. Detail
| MAIN IDEA | DETAIL |
| The general topic — what the text is mostly about. | A specific fact that supports the main idea. |
| Example: Someone talks about their morning routine. | Example: They wake up at 6:30 every day. |
| Listening Strategy: Identifying the Main Idea |
| STEP 1 — Before you listen: Read any questions or headings. What is the topic? |
| STEP 2 — First listening: Ask yourself: “What is this text mostly about?” — do not focus on details yet. |
| STEP 3 — Listen for repeated words or ideas — these point to the main idea. |
| STEP 4 — Listen to the first and last sentences — speakers often state the main idea there. |
| STEP 5 — Second listening: Now listen for the details (who, what, where, when, how many). |
