Teacher notes – Unit 11
Learning aim: Students write a longer, informal email (80+ words) planning a day trip. They also focus on correct spelling throughout.
Before writing: Review the spelling categories from the lesson on the board: (1) Double letters: accommodation, different. (2) Silent letters: write, know. (3) -tion endings: information, destination. (4) Tricky vowels: beautiful, receive. Give students 2 minutes to write down three words they often spell wrong and check them together.
During writing: Encourage students to use the task points as a structure: invite a friend and say why the place is special / how to get there / what to do / practical advice. The text must be friendly, informal, and well organised. Remind students: check your spelling before you finish.
Common errors: (1) Common misspellings: beutiful → beautiful, accomodation → accommodation, recieve → receive, definately → definitely. (2) Forgetting practical advice (clothes, snacks, water). (3) Writing a formal email instead of an informal one.
After writing: Spelling swap — students exchange emails and look for spelling mistakes. Mark any they find. Then correct together as a class.

Hi David,
Do you want to come on a day trip to Sintra on Saturday? It is a beautiful little town about 40 minutes from Lisbon by train. We can take the train from the central station at 9 o’clock. When we arrive, we can visit the National Palace in the morning. It is fascinating and full of information about the history of Portugal. In the afternoon, we can walk through the forest to the old castle — the views are incredible! Wear comfortable shoes because the paths are quite steep. Bring water and a light jacket too. Let me know if you want to come!

Hi Nadia,
Do you want to come on a day trip to Pamukkale on Saturday? It is a beautiful natural place famous for its white terraces and thermal pools. We can take the bus at 7 o’clock because the journey is about three hours. When we arrive, we can walk along the terraces in the morning and visit the ancient city in the afternoon. It is fascinating and full of information about history. Bring comfortable shoes because the ground is uneven. Also pack a swimsuit for the pools, some snacks and sunscreen — the sun is very strong there. I think it will be an incredible day! Let me know if you want to come.

Last month, I went on a day trip to Ephesus with three friends from university. We took the train for about an hour and a half. When we arrived, we visited the ancient city — it was absolutely fascinating. The Library of Celsus was incredible, and I learned a lot about the history of the city. We also walked along the beautiful marble streets. In the afternoon, we had lunch at a small restaurant near the entrance — the food was delicious.
My advice: wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and arrive early to avoid the large tourist groups. It was definitely one of my most memorable day trips. I recommend it to everyone!
