Teacher notes – Unit 2

Learning aim: Students write a short advert for an object they want to sell, using adjectives in the correct order.

Before writing: Write the order on the board as a simple chain: OPINION → SIZE → AGE → COLOUR → NATIONALITY → NOUN. Give one clear example: ‘a lovely small red Italian bicycle’. Drill with quick questions: ‘red / big / bag — what order?’ → ‘a big red bag’.

During writing: Remind students that adverts use short sentences — one idea per line. Check that at least two adjectives appear in the correct order.

Common errors: (1) Wrong adjective order: ‘a red lovely bicycle’. (2) Missing capital letter for nationalities (Italian, not italian). (3) Writing long sentences instead of short punchy ones.

After writing: Students read a partner’s advert and underline the adjectives. Are they in the correct order?

A

Model advert

Read and analyse
Step 1

Find the adjectives

Read the model advert. Click the four adjectives that describe the camera in the first sentence, then check.

CAMERA FOR SALE
It is a lovely small black Japanese camera. It is two years old but in perfect condition.
It is great for travel. Only €120. Message me: sofia.a@email.com

4 words: lovely, small, black, Japanese
Step 2

What is their order?

What type of adjective is each one?

1lovely camera
opinion — what the seller thinks.
2small camera
size — how big it is.
3black camera
colour — its colour.
4Japanese camera
nationality — where it is from.

Adjective order: lovely (opinion) → small (size) → black (colour) → Japanese (nationality). Correct!
The full order is: OPINION → SIZE → AGE → COLOUR → NATIONALITY → noun. Do not use commas between these adjectives.

FOUND: a small old brown wallet

I found it near the main canteen on Monday morning at about ten o’clock. It is made of leather. There is no name inside, but there are some bank cards and a library card. Please come to Room 214 in Building B to get it. Bring your student ID.
